The Piano Trio in B major, Op. 8, by Johannes Brahms was composed at the age of 21. The composer produced a revised version of the work 35 years later. It is the only work of Brahms to exist today in two published versions, although it is almost always the revised version that we hear performed today.

Based on the Passacaille (Chaconne) from the Harpsichord Suite No. 7 in G minor by Handel, Halvorsen’s Passacaglia is a virtuosic duo for solo violin and viola, later made world famous by artists such as Leopold Auer and Jascha Heifetz.

“Cellist Kim plays this work with an extraordinary variety of tonal colors, often by adjusting the intensity, speed and amplitude of the vibrato in his left hand. As one would expect of this composer, the Sonata is full of long, soaring melodies. Kim has a different vibrato for each melody. Pianist McLeavey Payne was a perfect match for Kim, as she delivered the large and demanding part with confidence, making good use of the beautiful tone of the Yamaha piano.”

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 50, was written in Rome between December 1881 and late January 1882. It is subtitled “In memory of a great artist”, in reference to Nikolai Rubinstein, his close friend and mentor, who had died on March 23, 1881.

The Trio for clarinet, cello and piano in A minor, Op. 114, was one of four chamber works featuring clarinet composed by Johannes Brahms in rapid succession after emerging from retirement toward e end of his life.
It is one of a small number of compositions for clarinet, cello and piano, and one of the very few to have entered the standard repertoire. Eusebius Mandyczewski, a scholar and friend of Brahms, wrote of the trio that “It is as though the instruments were in love with each other.”

In 1877, after wooing her for five years, Fauré had finally become engaged to Marieanne Viardot, daughter of the well-known singer Pauline Viardot. The engagement lasted for less than four months, and Marieanne broke it off, to Fauré’s considerable distress. It was in the later stages of their relationship that he began work on the quartet, in the summer of 1876. He completed it in 1879, and revised it in 1883, completely rewriting the finale.
